New Shoreham Lifeboat Station starts to take shape

The new RNLI Shoreham Lifeboat Station has finally risen up and is starting to take shape.

Last month the timber frame roof was lifted on with contractors’ working day and night to successfully complete this important project milestone.

The old lifeboat station, which was built in 1933, was demolished in January this year. Work then started on the same site in Kingston Beach to build a new modern lifeboat station to house a new state-of-the-art Tamar class lifeboat for Shoreham.

The new station will consist of a larger boat hall, crew training room, proper drying facilities for wet crew kit, changing facilities and a viewing platform for the public. It should be completed by October, 2010, depending on weather conditions during the next few winter months.

Shoreham lifeboat coxswain Peter Huxtable said: “We have had quite a few delays on the build but it was fantastic to see the timber frame roof go on and it finally start to take shape.

“The lifeboat crews, who are all volunteers, are really excited about the new lifeboat station and Tamar lifeboat which will bring us into the 21st century.”

You can support the lifeboat crews through the £1 million community appeal launched by the RNLI to help raise funds for the new lifeboat station in Shoreham.
