During the 2003 open day we were visited by three representatives from the Japan Coastguard.

In Japan the Coastguard are responsible not just for safety and rescue work, but also for policing the waters around the country. Though many of their vessels are much larger than RNLI lifeboats, they do have some comparable vessels for coastal rescue work.

In August 2004 we were visited by two students from the Japan Coastguard School, Tetsuya Sugiyama and Yoshiaki Miyachi. They were taken afloat on exercise, and were fascinated by the work of the RNLI, especially the fact that the crew are virtually all volunteers.

As you would expect from Japanese visitors, they were very courteous and extremely smartly dressed!
