The RNLI Shoreham ILB had its first service of 2012 when it was launched on to a report of a man in the water after a canoe had capsized south east of Shoreham Harbour. When the lifeboat crew reached the location at 3.05pm they spotted four people on the nearby beach. They checked and found one of them was the man who had been reported in the water. He had managed to swim ashore before the lifeboat arrived. His canoe was ashore on the West Spending Beach. The crew picked up the canoeist and transferred him to his canoe on the beach. The lifeboat then returned to station.

The ALB was launched to reports of a paddle boarder in distress off Lancing. Upon exiting the harbour entrance the only visual boarder was just to the east of Ferry Road. The Lifeboat crew spoke to him and he confirmed he had come from Lancing. His description also matched the informants. As he was upright and making his way to the shore the crew simply watched him paddle ashore to the safety of the beach. They then performed a search to the west as far as Brooklands to establish he was the only boarder at sea. With no-one else at sea the crew were stood down, concluding the first service of 2012 and the first under the command of the new coxswain Steve Smith.
