The ALB was launched after a yacht mid channel reported what they believed to be 4 red distress flares between them and the shore.

Reports like this are of particular concern as they could indicate a yacht in distress in the busy merchant shipping channels that run down the middle of the Channel.

The ALB travelled to Brighton and then out to sea conducting a search as she went. After some 3 hours she reached the site of the original reporting vessel, and having found nothing untoward was returned to station, the alert possibly having been caused by fireworks.

She was refueled and ready for service again just before 1:00 am the next morning.

19.10.05 11:51
The ALB was launched after a small sailing vessel issued a 'Pan Pan' distress call on VHF channel 16.

The 25' sloop with 2 persons aboard was 3.25 miles SW of Shoreham Harbour and becoming overwhelmed by worsening weather conditions.

The ALB located the vessel and took her under tow back to Shoreham.

16.10.05 15:49
The ALB was launched to a small vessel off Goring with engine failure.

When the crew arrived on scene they found the occupants suffering from sea sickness, and displaying signs of hypothermia.

They were taken aboard the lifeboat for treatment, and their boat was then towed to Shoreham and guided through the locks. The occupants were taken to the boathouse aboard the ALB where they were met by a friend.

The ALB was therefore launched and proceeded to a position some 11 miles off Worthing, where she took over the tow.

The boat was brought to Shoreham where she was guided through the locks into the canal to await repairs.

The tow was then re-attached and the craft was towed into Shoreham where it was landed at Silver Sands and handed over to the local Coastguard unit.

The crew reached the scene within 1 minute as the person had jumped from the area of the locks in the harbour. However, after starting a search the individual was recovered by the Police on the beach after swimming ashore himself.

It turned out he was attempting to scare his girlfriend by faking a suicide attempt. The ILB therefore returned to station, leaving the individual concerned in the hands of the Police.

The vessel was located, and towed to Brighton Marina.

21.06.05 18:59

23.02.05 18:00
As the crew mustered for the fortnightly exercise they were requested to immediately launch both the ALB and the ILB to an incident off Brighton. A 19 year old male had jumped from the end of Brighton Pier, in a possible suicide attempt.

Brighton's Atlantic 75 ILB, which had also been launched, recovered the casualty successfully after he had been in the water for around 10 minutes and the Shoreham boats were stood down. The ALB was launched to a 60' Danish ketch with steering failure around 5 miles off Shoreham. The vessel was on her first trip under new ownership, on passage to Denmark.

However, as the tide was ebbing, the decision was made to take her under tow to ensure she reached the entrance with sufficient water for her draft.

On arrival at Shoreham she was then passed into the care of local coastguard units at the lock.
