A large scale search was therefore initiated, involving Newhaven, Brighton and Shoreham lifeboats as well as the coastguard rescue helicopter. After spending around 2 hours in the water, the woman was spotted and picked up by Brighton Lifeboat. She was taken ashore and is expected to make a full recovery. |
| 21.07.07 23:06 Both boats were launched to reports of a light spotted beneath the surface off Lancing. When the crews arrived on scene they discovered the mysterious light, which potentially could have been a diver in distress or a submerged lifejacket. On closer examination however it was found to be a light and battery, in a bag, attached to a line and hooks. It appeared to be an attempt to lure fish - unsuccessfully as there were no fish attached to it. The light and hooks were recovered to prevent further reports and the boats returned to station. |
| 14.07.07 15:59 Solent Coastguard requested the immediate launch of the ILB to 2 persons in the water near the toll bridge up the river Adur. |||
| 17.06.07 Another busy afternoon with the duty ILB crew called into action three times. At 13:04 the ILB was launched to reports of a 30' vessel sinking in the harbour. Armed with a portable salvage pump, the crew made their way to the scene to find a boat which had been holed by another. The owner was in attendance and did not require any assistance. Then at 14:40 the crew were tasked to a 45' yacht calling for assistance with a reported rope around her prop. When the crew arrived on scene they found the vessel, which had in fact had a fuel starvation problem, to be under way under her own power and no longer in need of help. The boat was then re-launched at 17:48 to an inflatable dinghy with engine failure in the harbour. The craft, with 2 adults and one child aboard, was towed to Kingston Beach for recovery. |
| 16.06.07 15:00 Both boats went to the aid of a dinghy race off Shoreham, which had been disrupted by freshening wind conditions. The ILB crew took the craft under tow and returned to Sussex Marine Watersports where it is based. Then at approximately 17:00 the ILB was launched again to a 21' Bayliner power boat off Worthing Pier. The boat was towed to Shoreham for re-fueling before continuing her passage to Littlehampton. The crew were then re-tasked at about 18:10 to an 18' power boat in the harbour, which had also ran out of fuel. It was towed to Emerald Quay. |
| 17.05.07 10:08 The ALB was launched to a french yacht that had suffered steering failure mid channel. The yacht, which was some 22 miles south of Shoreham, was in the middle of the busy southern shipping lane in the Channel, with little or no ability to steer. The lifeboat reached the yacht in approximately 90 minutes and secured a tow and drogue, before commencing the long tow to Shoreham. They reached the harbour just before 4pm. |
| 15.05.07 16:39 The ALB was launched to a yacht aground near Brighton Marina. The 54ft vessel with eight people on board got into trouble at the entrance of the Marina in two-metre swells and ran aground. When it became clear the vessel was too large for Brighton ILB to tow to safety, Shorehams offshore lifeboat was called. See pics here, courtesy of the Shoreham Coastguard team. The lifeboat crew managed to get a towline attached but the yacht lost its rudder as it was pulled clear. It was towed to Shoreham Harbour and assisted through the locks into the canal. Subsequently at 2.45am on Wednesday Shoreham firefighters were called to a report of a fire onboard the yacht. They put out a severe blaze in the engine room which is believed to have started accidentally. Two Shoreham lifeboat crew were later put on board to pump it out as it was brought up river to the Sussex Yacht Club for repairs. |
| 10.05.07 00:46 Following a request from Sussex Police, the ALB was launched to search for a potentially vulnerable person in the water off Hove. In conditions gusting to gale force 8, and in driving rain, the crew searched the area for over an hour. They were joined by the Sussex Police helicopter H900. Despite this extensive search, no trace of the person was found, and the crew were stood down by Solent Coastguard to return to station. |
| 07.05.07 18:09 The ILB was paged to respond to a windsurfer with a broken rig off Widewater Lagoon, Shoreham Beach. However, due to the near gale force conditions the coxswain decided that the ALB would be the more appropriate boat to launch. The boat was therefore launched and reached the area in around 10 minutes. On arrival on scene it was found the windsurfer had managed to get ashore and had been met by local coastguard units. The ALB was therefore stood down to return to station. |
| 05.05.07 13:45 A busy day for the lifeboats at Shoreham. The ILB launched to carry out a routine exercise, and almost immediately attended a 14' broken down speedboat in the middle of the river, near the lifeboat slipway. The disabled craft was towed to Emerald Quay, where its owners had launched from. Upon being released from the task, the crew were asked to return to the boathouse to use the Radio Direction Finding equipment, to help isolate the source of a carrier transmission on the VHF distress channel 16. Having finished this task the crew re-launched on exercise, and were immediately tasked to attend a 37' ketch 2 miles south of the entrance which had become entangled in some fishing equipment. The crew reached the vessel and made several attempts to free her, and then to cut the offending lines. This proved impossible, so at 15:49 they requested the launch of the ALB, which carries equipment designed for this kind of situation. With the ALB on scene the line was quickly cut and the vessel returned to Shoreham under her own power. Both boats then returned to station, but at around 5:00 the ILB was launched again, to reports of 3 jetskis being driven at high speed off Beach Green, Lancing, and representing a danger to swimmers. Although tasked to the scene in case of injury, the crew were asked to give advice as the Police, although called, were unable to attend. When the crew arrived on scene they found one jetski adrift and 2 on the beach, one of which had broken down. The crew took one under tow and returned the craft and owner to Sussex Marine Watersports, in the river. |

| 29.04.07 13:50 The ILB was launched to a broken down 16' day boat about 2 miles south of the entrance. The boat, which had suffered engine failure, was taken under tow and returned to the Surrey Hard up river. As the crew were finishing berthing the casualty they were re-tasked to assist Brighton Lifeboat and Sussex Police in a search of 2 missing boys in inflatable beach craft off Hove Lagoon. After a short search the boys were found by the Brighton crew and then transferred to Shoreham ILB to be taken ashore, the ILB being a more suitable boat for beaching. |
| 28.04.07 22:15 The crew were paged to launch both boats to a 26' sailing boat in distress around 2.5 Miles south of Shoreham. Both boats were prepared but as they were about to be launched they were stood down by Solent Coastguard. The Shoreham Pilot Cutter had made contact with the casualty and established they were not in immediate danger. |

After issuing a Mayday distress call the occupants found they were unable to fight the fire aboard. They were rescued by a passing fishing boat and transferred to Shoreham Lifeboat when she arrived on scene. The ALB began tackling the fire, but the vessel was burning with such ferocity that both Shoreham and Brighton Lifeboats wer instructed to standby and not attempt to fight it. The boat sank just after 3pm, the crew being returned to shore aboard the lifeboat. Click here for a selection of pictures, some by the Shoreham crew and some by members of the public. |
