Key: ILB - Inshore Lifeboat. ALB - All Weather Lifeboat. Times given are when the crew were paged/ tasked, in BST if applicable. |
| Calls this year: | ALB: 31 | ILB: 62 | |
| 23.11.2008 12:50 The ALB was launched to the aid of the 49' Westerly cruiser 'Kittiwake'. The vessel was on passage to Newhaven and was suffering from an overheating engine. In deteriorating weather conditions the ALB was launched to assist her into Shoreham. Due to the low state of the tide the boats waited outside the harbour for around 2 hours before there was enough water for the Jittiwake to enter Shoreham. She was then towed in and entered the canal via the locks. |
| 22.10.2008 16:26 The ILB was launched to the assistance of a single handed dinghy sailor in distress. The 66 year old sailor had capsized his 14' dinghy in gusty conditions just the the east of the harbour. He was struggling to right the vessel and had become very tired. When the ILB crew arrived on scene he was in the water clinging to the centreboard. After an unsuccessful attempt to right the vessel by the mast, one of the crew entered the water to assist the gentleman in righting the boat. The dinghy was then taken under tow back to the Shoreham Sailing Club and recovered. |
| 15.10.2008 20:50 Both boats were launched to reports of a person in the water off Goring. The ILB was launched first with the ALB close behind. However, with the ILB around half way there and the ALB just clearing the harbour entrance, the casualty was detained by the police and the rescue aborted. Both boats were sttod down and returned to station. |
| 14.10.2008 03:33 Both boats were launched to reports of a person in the water near the end of Worthing Pier. With the ILB close to being on scene and the ALB around half way there, the casualty was located ashore by Police officers. The lifeboats were therefore stood down to return to station. On arrival back at Shoreham the tide was too low to facilitate recovery of the ALB onto the slipway. She was therefore moored at the floating pontoon near the locks, and the crew mustered at 8am to re-house. |
| 12.10.2008 18:59 The ALB was launched to the assistance of a broken down fishing boat around 3 miles from the harbour. The disabled vessel was located and towed back the the Sussex Yacht Club where she was moored. |
| 12.10.2008 16:03 The ALB was tasked to launch to a vessel with a fouled anchor to the west of Brighton Marina. However, as the lifeboat was about to launch with all crew aboard, the vessel freed her anchor and was able to continue her passage. The ALB launch was therefore cancelled. |
| 07.10.2008 17:52 The ILB was launched to rescue 3 people in the water near the Sussex Yacht Club. The 3 casualties had been in a small open dinghy which capsized in the choppy river conditions. One person managed to make it ashore, and the other 2 were rescued from a moored boat to which they were clinging. They were treated by an ambulance at the scene. After all the people were ashore, the ILB crew recovered the dinghy and some personal belongings before returning to station. |
| 05.10.2008 08:10 The ILB was launched to recover a body spotted in the river. The deceased was recovered by the crew and brought back to the boathouse where it was put into the care of the Police. |
| 04.10.2008 18:30 Shoreham ILB was launched to assist Selsey Lifeboat who were towing a vessel to Shoreham from Littlehampton. The former pilot cutter had been on passage from Littlehampton to Cherbourg when she had fouled her props and got into distress. Conditions were severe with winds gusting in excess of 50 mph. The ILB crew provided support to the Selsey crew in managing the tow. Other crew members then joined the ILB crew to assist the disabled vessel throught the locks and into the canal. |
| 28.09.2008 15:23 Shoreham ILB was tasked to the report of a vessel that had engine failure and had ran aground in the river near to the yacht club. Once on scene the ILB took the casulty under tow and placed the vessel on a vacant mooring buoy in the river. Once secure the casulty was taken off his vessel and landed ashore. Shoreham ILB was then stood down and returned to station. |
| 22.09.2008 19:40 The ALB was in the middle of being recovered after the previous tasking when she was re-launched to the fishing vessel 'Adur Diver', which had encountered engine failure just outside the harbour entrance. The casualty vessel was towed back into Shoreham. |
| 22.09.2008 18:25 The ALB was launched to the assistance of the fishing vessel Jaycee D which had suffered engine failure around 2 miles south of Shoreham. The disabled vessel was taken under tow back to the locks at Shoreham. |
| 21.09.2008 15:26 Whilst the ILB was on exercise the crew came across a capsized Hobie Cat with one person on board approx 1 mile south west of Shoreham Harbour. Once along side the casulty they confirmed he required assistance. One crew member was placed on the vessel and with the aid of the crew of the casulty vessel they righted the Hobie Cat. The crew member returned to the ILB and the Hobie Cat proceeded on its way back into Shoreham Harbour. |
| 13.09.2008 15:48 While the ILB was afloat on exercise the Brighton Beach Office contacted Solent Coastguard to report a woman who had entered the water off the end of Brighton Pier. Solent launched Brighton ILB and also tasked Shoreham ILB to proceed at their best speed. Shoreham ILB reached the site in 7 minutes just after Brighton ILB arrived on scene. The person, a woman in her 30s who appeared to be suffering from the effects of alcohol, had been pulled from the water by a pleasure boat. She was transferred to Brighton ILB and taken back to the Marina for medical treatment. Shoreham ILB was released to return to station. |
| 12.09.2008 17:44 The ILB was launched to reports of three kitesurfers in distress near the harbour entrance. A sudden shift and drop in wind had left them downed and some distance offshore. The ILB crew recovered one surfer and his rig from the water. They then recovered a second kite that had been abandoned by its owner, who had swum ashore. The third casualty had made it ashore with his rig. The rescued surfer was uninjured and dropped off at the beach with his rig. The ILB was then re-tasked to tow a becalmed dinghy in the river to their slipway. When this was completed the crew were asked to return to sea and perform a search to the west towards Worthing for any further surfers affected by the wind shift. With nothing further found the crew were stood down to return to station. |
| 06.09.2008 10:18 The ILB was launched to a capsized 'cox'd four' racing scull in the river. The boat had capsized in windy river conditions up to gale force 7, and the four crew plus the coxswain had entered the water. The ILB arrived as the casualties had just made it to the shore. After assessing them for the effects of cold they decided to make their own way back up the river to their rowing club premises. They therefore relaunched their boat and the ILB escorted them back up the river where the crew assisted them in recovering the craft. |
| 02.09.2008 16:16 The ILB was launched to search the river for a missing boat. The vessel had been reported missing by the skippers wife having gone missing on passage from the Isle of Wight. After a short search the boat was located in the Surrey Hard and the ILB crew were stood down. |
| 31.08.2008 20:40 The ALB was launched to assist Littlehampton Lifeboat with a vessel aground. The 31' wooden vessel had grounded entering Littlehampton on 'the bar' and had lost steerage. Due to the weather conditions the tow was proving difficult even with the power of an Atlantic 75. She was therefore taken under tow b y the Shoreham ALB and towed to Shoreham for repairs. |
| 25.08.2008 16:30 The ALB was launched to the aid of an 18.5 metre vessel in distress off Lancing. Though the vessel was making way, the crew were not confident of being able to safely enter the harbour in the strong force 7 winds. The ALB was therefore tasked to take the vessel under tow back to Shoreham. |
| 24.08.2008 17:33 The ILB was launched in conditions gusting up to force 7 to a windsurfer in distress. The surfer had suffered a failure with his rig. In addition he had been surfing for almost 2 hours and was exhausted and extremely cold. He was taken back to the lifeboat station and warmed up, to be collected by his family. |
| 23.08.2008 14:12 The crew were paged to launch the ALB to join the search for a missing diver. As the crew were mustering and preparing to launch the diver was located having surfaced some distance from his dive boat. The search was therefore called off and the launch cancelled. |
| 22.08.2008 13:10 The ILB was launched to the assistance of a male in his 30s who had been seen entering the water to the west of Worthing Pier. However, with the crew around halfway there the casualty was recovered ashore and the lifeboat was stood down to return to station. |
| 21.08.2008 11:33 The ILB was launched to the aid of a kitesurfer off Lancing. The casualty had been reported struggling in the water off the beach. As the crew approached the scene the surfer made it ashore on his own and was treated by local coastguard units. The ILB was stood down and returned to station. |
| 15.08.2008 14:26 The crew were paged to launch the ALB to a 31' Nicholson sailing boat around 8 miles offshore with engine failure. As the lifeboat was about to launch the casualty vessel reported they had regained power and the launch was cancelled. |
| 14.08.2008 22:52 The crew were paged to assemble at the boathouse and bring the ILB to 'Immediate Readiness'. This is an instruction to prepare the boat and crew for an immediate launch but to wait for a launch instruction before actually putting the boat in the water. On arrival it became clear the Sussex police had initiated the call after being contacted by a potentially suicidal male claiming to be near the lifeboat station and threatening to enter the water. After a short search involving police officers and lifeboat crew the man was detained at the shoreline and taken into custody. The crew were then stood down, the boat not having been required to launch. |
| 12.08.2008 20:06 The ALB was launched at the request of Sussex Police, who were talking to a male on the west side of Worthing Pier. The weather was rough with winds gusting up to gale force 8, and the police were concerned the man may jump from the pier. However as the boat got approximately half way to Worthing the man surrendered himself to the police and the lifeboat was stood down to return to station. |
| 09.08.2008 16:10 The ALB was launched to the assistance of a 24.5 metre victorian barge. The vessel, a dutch barge built in 1881 and with 3 persons on board, had lost engine power and had anchored between the piers at Brighton, but had started to drag their anchor. Conditions were bad with 3m seas and winds gusting severe gale force 9. The Lifeboat reached the vessel in around 15 minutes and established a tow. The boat was then towed into Brighton Marina and moored safely on a pontoon. Video, courtesy of the Shoreham Herald. |
| 02.08.2008 03:34 The ILB was launched at the request of Sussex Police to a male that had entered the water up the river Adur. The man had run from the Police for reasons unknown, and had fled into the river. After spending around 20 minutes in the water the man was rescued by the ILB crew. He was extremely cold and disorientated. He was taken back to the lifeboat station where he was attended initially by the lifeboat crew and then by a paramedic. Suffering from Hypothermia, his body temperature was recorded at just 35 degrees centigrade. After being warmed up he was transferred to Worthing Hospital for further treatment. However, he fled from the ambulance at Worthing Hospital and headed back towards the seafront. Suspecting he had potentially suicidal intent, the Coastguard initiated another search involving shore based units, and tasked the ILB to relaunch and perform a beachfront search. The crew made two passes along the beach before being stood down. Thankfully the RNLI thermal suit that the man had been loaned to warm him up appeared at the boathouse the following day. It is therefore thought that he returned home after his early morning run unharmed! |
| 30.07.08 19:00 Shoreham ILB whilst on exercise was diverted to the reports of two fourteen year old boys in a inflatable dingy that had been reported missing by a mother who had last seen them at 15:00 off of Goring. Once on scene the ILB proceeded to investigate inflatable's in the area. At 1925 the two boys were found safe and well and shortly after were reunited with the mother on the beach with Shoreham coastguard mobile unit. Shoreham ILB then departed the scene and returned to station and was made ready for service. |
| 27.07.08 16:59 The ILB was launched to a 20' power boat almost on the beach off Ferry Road, Shoreham. The boat had suffered steering failure and had drifted into the beach due to the prevailing on shore breeze. It was towed back to its berth at Emerald Quay. |
| 27.07.08 16:16 The duty ILB crew manning the station were tasked to retrieve a boat that had been cut loose by children up the river. The boat was located and taken back to its mooring. |

| 22.07.08 15:56 The ILB was launched in response to a 999 call concerning a possible broken down vessel off Carats Cafe. After an extensive search no broken down boat was found and the call was determined to be a false alarm with good intent. |
| 21.07.08 16:30 The ILB was launched to recover a dinghy which had overturned in the river with 3 persons aboard. The occupants had swum ashore and apparently fled the scene, though it was uncertain whether the dinghy was stolen or not. While afloat the crew were alerted to a small speedboat upside down near Emerald Quay. They recovered the boat and secured it for recovery by the harbour office later. |
| 16.07.08 16:40 The ILB was launched to a sailing vessel reported to be in difficulty off Shoreham. Once on scene the casualties refused assistance. They were not equipped with lifejackets or any means of signalling for help should the need arise. The ILB escorted them back to the harbour where the local coastguard unit was waiting to offer advice. |
| 15.07.08 18:40 The ILB was launched to a dinghy in distress off the entrance. Once on scene it became apparent the casualty had lost his rudder. However, he was able to make way with the assistance of a small outboard, so the ILB escorted him back to the safety of the harbour. |
| 12.07.08 14:05 The ILB was launched to a 16' sailing catamaran in danger of sinking off Hove Lagoon. The vessel was holed, but the crew had made a makeshift repair with Gaffer tape. The ILB crew escorted the craft and occupants back to the beach before returning to station. |
| 10.07.08 22:03 Both boats were launched to reports of a middle aged woman who had entered the water near Dolphin Lodge, to the west of Worthing Pier. A search was commenced involving boat boats and shore based coastguard units. However, after a short time the lady was located ashore and the search was halted with all units being stood down. |
| 04.07.08 21:25 The ILB was launched to the assistance of an 18' bilge keeled yacht on the beach at Ferry Road, Shoreham Beach. However, the crew were unable to tow the boat clear as it was too high up the beach. Therefore at 22:27 the ALB was launched and successfully towed the vessel clear of the shore, before towing her back to her base at the Sussex Yacht Club. Video, courtesy of the Shoreham Herald |
| 03.07.08 20:27 Both boats were launched after an abandoned surf kite was spotted. As the crews proceeded with a view to searching for a potential casualty in the water, the coastguard units on the beach identified a kite surfer ashore who had lost his rig. The ALB located the lost rig and retrieved it. Having established there were no persons in danger the boats returned to station. |
| 29.06.08 12:15 The ILB was launched to a Hobiecat style catamaran dinghy in distress. The ILB crew helped the 2 occupants right the boat and then escorted them back to their base at the Sussex Motor Yacht Club. |
| 27.06.08 12:55 The ALB was launched to a french yacht reported as sinking off Worthing. The crew proceeded along with Littlehampton's Atlantic 75. The Littlehampton boat reached the casualty first and commenced pumping the vessel and established a tow into Littlehampton. When the Shoreham Lifeboat arrived on scene they put a more powerful pump aboard and established there was no further water ingress. Once the vessel and occupants were safe the ALB returned to station. Video, courtesy of the Shoreham Herald |
| 22.06.08 13:18 The ALB was launched to a sailing vessel which had issued a Mayday distress call off Worthing. Conditions were gusting to gale force 8. |||
| 14.06.08 18:25 The ILB was tasked to attend a windsurfer in distress off Grand Avenue, Goring. When the crew reached the casualty, whose rig had broken, he had been in the water for around an hour and was showing early symptoms of hypothermia. He was taken ashore and transferred to an ambulance for treatment. |
| 14.06.08 17:35 The ILB was launched to a 4 metre RIB with steering failure, off Carats Cafe. The craft, with 2 persons on board, was towed to Emerald Quay up the river. |
| 10.06.08 16:08 The ILB was launched to the assistance of a small inflatable with 2 persons aboard off Lancing. The had been blown offshore from the Mermaid Cafe and the occupants were signalling for assistance. The ILB recovered the craft and the two adult occupants, and returned them to the shore. They were then re-tasked to investigate another inflatable blowing offshore. The empty craft was recovered and returned to the beach, after it was established no persons were in distress. The ILB was then released to return to station. |
| 09.06.08 17:42 The ALB was launched to a fishing boat that had broken down, 8.5 miles south of the harbour. The boat had suffered electrical failure and the crew were unable to start the engine. They were taken under tow and returned to Shoreham. The lifeboat then towed the craft into the locks before returning to station. |
| 04.06.08 20:00 While afloat on exercise both boats were tasked to the West Pier, where a canoeist had been reported in distress. The ILB arrived on scene first and was soon joined by Brighton ILB which had also been tasked. It was established that the casualty had made it ashore safely and all three boats were released to return to station. |
| 04.06.08 10:31 The ILB was launched to a kayaker in distress near the harbour entrance. The kayaker had fallen from his craft and was unable to get back on. Having been in the water for some 45 minutes he was extremely cold and displaying early signs of hypothermia. The crew brought him back to the boathouse where he was warmed up. They then returned to sea to retrieve the kayak. The casualty made a full recovery at the station and did not require further medical attention. |
| 02.06.08 12:38 The ILB was launched to a power boat with engine failure south of Hove Lagoon. The craft was towed to Shoreham where it was tied up outside the locks, ready to be taken into the canal at the first available lock. |
| 01.06.08 11:18 The ILB was launched to a stranded sailing vessel just off the harbour entrance. The vessel was equipped with an outboard engine but it had failed, and there was not enough wind to sail. She was towed back to the Sussex Yacht Club. |
| 31.05.08 08:34 The ILB was launched to investigate some possible wreckage spotted off Worthing. The local coastguard unit was on the beach and had been tracing a number of pieces of timber, and what could possible have been an upturned hull. The ILB crew investigated the items and found them to be discarded timber, not wreckage. They recovered three pieces which could present a danger to shipping and landed them ashore. |
| 30.05.08 21:02 The ALB was launched to a 30' motor boat aground at the King Alfred leisure centre at Hove. The boat had also been attended by the Brighton ILB but they were unable to get it clear of the shore. When the ALB crew arrived on scene the boat was almost clear of the waterline and far too aground to be towed off the beach without risking serious damage. She was therefore left to re-float at the next high tide and the ALB returned to station. |
| 26.05.08 02:00 Both boats were launched to the vessel Michelle Mary, which was beached at Worthing to the west of the pier. The ILB reached the casualty first and checked for any occupants. No-one was aboard and there were signs the boat had been entered by force. The boat was on the shingle, with the bow wedged against a wooden groyne. The ILB crew attached a line and managed to tow the vessel clear of the beach, while checking to see if she was taking any water. The tow was then handed to the ALB which commenced a tow to Shoreham. At the locks, the boat was re-united with its owner and the ILB took her into the canal and moored her up awaiting inspection for damage, and as a potential crime scene. |
| 24.05.08 An exceptionally busy day for the ILB crew. At 14:15 the boat was launched at the request of Solent Coastguard to a windsurfer in distress. While on route to the casualty he made it ashore unassisted. The crew were then re-tasked to a jetskier who had become separated from his craft. The two had become separated and the jetski had blown away from the rider. Rider and craft were re-united. Then at 16:30 the boat was launched again to a windsurfer in distress. He had hired the board and by his own admission had chosen a rig too powerful for him. He was taken ashore at Widewater. |
| 23.05.08 12:45 The ALB was launched to a vessel 20 miles off Shoreham with a fatally injured crewman. The casualty was brought back to Shoreham and transferred to the coroners office. |
| 18.05.08 18:44 The ALB was launched to a 22' sailing boat off Worthing with engine failure. The boat was struggling with intermittent engine performance and becoming concerned. The ALB crew located the casualty and towed it back to Shoreham, which had been its planned destination. |
| 18.05.08 15:00 The ILB was tasked to go to Goring to search for a windsurfer reported to be in trouble. On arrival the crew joined the 2 lifeboats from Littlehampton and performed a search of the area. With the coastguard interviewing people ashore, it was decided that the area had been effectively searched with no result, and the boats were stood down- - the casualty thought to have come ashore unseen. |
| 17.05.08 08:11 The ALB was launched to investigate a submerged 17' boat, which had been discovered by a fishing vessel. After examining the craft, which was some three miles west of Shoreham, it was evident no persons had been lost. The boat was therefore pumped out and towed back to the harbour. |
| 12.05.08 18:26 The ILB was launched to reports of 2 people in distress in the water off Worthing Pier. Having initially been called to locate and retrieve a drifting inflatable off Worthing, the crew were tasked to reports of 2 persons in the water, one near the legs of Worthing Pier and one some distance off. With the lifeboat nearly on scene, both casualties made it ashore and were attended to by local coastguard units and an ambulance. The ILB crew were then re-tasked to search for the original inflatable, but it could no longer be found and the crew were returned to station. |
| 11.05.08 13:17 The ILB was launched to reports of a missing spear fisherman off Church Rocks. After carrying out a search it was established he had been picked up by his vessel. The crew made their way to the craft and checked the fisherman for injury. After establishing he needed no further assistance the crew returned to station. |
| 10.05.08 20:48 Both boats were launched to join a search for a swimmer. The man had been missing since early evening, the call being prompted by the discovery of clothing and personal effects on the beach. After a search lasting more than two hours, and involving both Shoreham lifeboats, Brighton ILB and the police helicopter, the man was located safe and well ashore. |
| 10.05.08 10:53 The ILB was launched to a broken down vesell half a mile to the west of the harbour. The craft, with 2 persons on board, had suffered engine failure and had called the harbour office for help, who in turn had informed the coastguard. The boat was towed back to the harbour where she was taken through the locks with the kind assistance of the fishing vessel Jenna D. |
| 06.05.08 20:07 The ILB was launched to reports of a person in the water near Worthing Pier. The alarm had been raised by a person on the shore. On arrival the crew located a 32 year old man who had been attempting to swim to the buoys off the beach. He was brought into the lifeboat and taken ashore. The water in the area is still extremely cold and as the man had been in it for some time it was decided that examination by a medical professional would be prudent. The Coastguard rescue helicopter, which had been tasked to the incident in the first place, landed on the beach so that the on board Paramedic could examine the man and establish he did not need further treatment. The ILB crew were then released to return to station. |
| 04.05.08 12:07 The ILB was launched to a broken down vesell just opposite the station slipway. The disabled vessel was taken under tow and returned to her mooring. |
| 26.04.08 12:42 The ALB was launched to the 36' power boat 'Horatio', after the vessel had lost power near the Sewer Outfall buoy off Shoreham Harbour. The skipper had issued a 'Pan Pan' call for assistance. She was taken under tow back to Shoreham but managed to rectify the fault, and resumed her passage back to Brighton. After escorting the boat from Shoreham the ALB returned to station. |
| 17.04.08 18:52 The ILB was launched to assist a 10m fishing boat sinking up the river. The vessel had become swamped after taking on water while at her mooring. The crew reached the scene quickly with a portable salvage pump, but the vessel was well under water and nothing could be done to save her. The ILB then stood by while a stores boat was taken to another mooring, to prevent it being dragged under by the sunken boat as the tide rose. |
| 06.04.08 10:38 In heavy snow and very poor visibility, the ILB was launched to a small day boat lost off Shoreham. The craft was poorly equipped with no working GPS, or radio, and only a fading mobile phone which they used to contact the coastguard. Having reached the given position the casualty was not to be found, so the ALB was then launched to carry out a search. The ILB returned to harbour. Having located the casualty and taken 2 crew aboard, the ALB commenced a tow back to Shoreham. The crew were then re-tasked to search for an open fishing boat lost, around 2 miles SE of the entrance. The occupants were struggling with a malfunctioning compass and had become disorientated. The ILB was therefore re-launched to take over the original tow, and the ALB commenced a search for the second missing vessel. Upon locating the second vessel the lifeboat towed her and her crew back to Shoreham, and the ILB was launched for a third time to take the boat through the locks. The rescued casualties were suffering from extreme cold and in some cases seasickness, but were otherwise uninjured. pic |
| 04.04.08 10:07 The ILB was launched to a 24' motor cruiser with engine failure. The vessel was taken under tow from just outside the harbour entrance and towed to Emerald Quay. |
| 02.03.08 12:31 The ILB was launched to reports of a kitesurfer in distress in the harbour entrance. When the crew arrived on scene the surfer had made it to the shore unassisted, but the ILB recovered his kite, and returned to the station. |
| 28.02.08 10:36 The ALB was launched to evacuate an Danish crewman from a merchant vessel. The crewman was confused and clearly ill, and a Danish doctor had asked for him to be taken to hospital. He was therefore taken aboard the ALB and back to Shoreham to a waiting ambulance. From there he was taken to Worthing Hospital. |
| 16.02.08 14:25 The ILB was launched to a disabled 24' motor vessel off Shoreham. The craft had suffered steering failure and had lost a portion of the drive system. It was taken under tow back to Shoreham and into the locks. |
| 13.02.08 18:40 The ALB was launched to a disabled 60' fishing vessel adrift between Shoreham and Selsey. The vessel, which is based at Shoreham, was towed back to the harbour. |
| 10.02.08 22:01 The ILB was launched to a small boat without power, around 500 yards from the harbour entrance. The craft, with two persons on board, had lost power. It was taken under tow and returned to the harbour. |
| 10.02.08 11:59 The ILB was launched to a 25' cabin cruiser adrift in the river. The vessel, with three persons on board, had lost power and was adrift between the footbridge and the Norfolk bridge. It was towed back to its mooring at Riverside Marine. |
